Engineering a Custom Outdoor Photo Printing Kiosk for a U.S. Project

Outdoor photo printing projects require more than placing a printer inside a standard kiosk. The display must remain readable under changing daylight, the enclosure must withstand outdoor use, and the internal hardware must support the specific printing workflow required by the operator.

For a U.S. customer, CRTLY recently developed a custom outdoor photo printing kiosk built around these requirements. The project combined a 2,000-nit high-brightness display with automatic brightness adjustment, a galvanized steel enclosure with a wood-grain decorative finish, and two integrated printers for different print formats.

The project also demonstrates how a custom outdoor kiosk can be engineered around a customer’s existing application and printing workflow rather than forcing the operator to use a fixed kiosk configuration.

A photo printing kiosk used outdoors faces different engineering challenges from an indoor self-service terminal. Sunlight readability, surface durability, thermal conditions, printer integration and service access all need to be considered during enclosure and hardware design.

For this project, the customer required a kiosk that could support conventional document and photo printing while also accommodating personalized magnetic photo products.

Instead of treating the kiosk as a standard enclosure, CRTLY designed the hardware around the intended operating environment and the customer’s printing workflow.

Outdoor kiosk displays must remain readable when ambient light changes throughout the day. For this custom outdoor photo printing kiosk, CRTLY configured a 2,000-nit high-brightness display.

The display system also supports automatic brightness adjustment based on surrounding light conditions. In stronger daylight, the screen can increase brightness to improve visibility. Under lower ambient light, brightness can be reduced to provide a more comfortable viewing experience and avoid unnecessary power consumption.

This 2,000-nit high brightness kiosk display configuration was selected specifically for this project and should not be described as the standard specification for every CRTLY outdoor self-service kiosk platform. Other brightness levels can be configured for different outdoor self service kiosk deployments.

The enclosure presented another engineering challenge. The customer wanted the visual warmth of a wood-grain finish while retaining the structural and corrosion-resistant advantages of galvanized steel.

Producing a stable decorative wood effect directly on galvanized metal can be difficult because conventional coatings may have limited adhesion and long-term outdoor durability.

For this project, CRTLY used a heat-transfer process to create the wood-grain effect on the metal enclosure. This approach allowed the kiosk to maintain the requested appearance while keeping the underlying galvanized structure suitable for outdoor use.

The selected finishing process was designed for long-term outdoor appearance retention. Based on the process specification for this project, the target service appearance is approximately 3–5 years under normal outdoor use conditions.

A wood grain kiosk enclosure finished this way shows how a custom outdoor kiosk can meet branding and environmental requirements at the same time.

The internal hardware was designed around more than one printing requirement. Two printers were integrated inside this custom photo printing kiosk so that different media and output formats could be supported within one self-service terminal.

Depending on the customer’s software and workflow, the hardware can support conventional document printing, photo printing and specialized personalized print products.

CRTLY’s role in this type of project is primarily to integrate the required printers and peripherals into the kiosk hardware and provide the necessary API, SDK or interface-level support for the customer’s application.

CRTLY is not being presented here as the provider of a complete social-media photo-printing software platform. The photo printer kiosk hardware supports the customer’s application; the application remains responsible for the end-user workflow.

One of the more distinctive applications in this project is personalized magnetic photo printing.

The customer’s workflow can allow users to select or capture an image, process it through the application, and print the image onto specialized magnetic media.

The magnetic material used for the finished product is a PVC-based media with a magnetic backing, allowing the printed photo to attach directly to compatible metal surfaces such as refrigerator doors.

The same photo printing kiosk hardware can also be configured to support portrait-style photo products or other personalized print formats, depending on the printer and media selected for the project. Photo magnet printing and magnetic photo printing capabilities therefore depend on the selected media, printer and the customer’s application software rather than on a fixed CRTLY software package.

In this project, image selection is handled through the customer’s application workflow.

Depending on the software architecture, the kiosk can support image input from approved online sources, local uploads or an integrated camera. Social-media content, including platforms such as TikTok or Instagram, can only be accessed where the customer’s software, account permissions and the relevant platform interfaces allow it.

CRTLY can support the kiosk-side hardware integration and API or SDK connectivity required by the customer’s software architecture.

Before shipment, the customer visited CRTLY to inspect the finished kiosk, internal hardware layout and service access.

For custom kiosk projects, this stage is important because enclosure structure, printer access, component layout and maintenance space can be reviewed against the original project requirements before delivery.

The inspection also gives both sides an opportunity to confirm the final hardware configuration and resolve any remaining installation or integration details.

This project illustrates why a custom outdoor kiosk is not simply a standard cabinet with different components installed inside.
